How do I remove oil-based pomade from my hair?

Hoe was ik pomade op oliebasis uit mijn haar?

The greasiest product for your hairstyle. Pomade. This product has been used by avid enthusiasts for centuries. I remember my grandfather no differently. His gray hair slicked back and draped over his skull like a helmet.

He washed his hair – if I remember correctly – once every 2/3 weeks. Those were different times. Pomade on (petroleum) oil basis still has a large fan base because it has so many advantages. Washing this type of pomade out of your hair is just a bit of a thing.

Tip: If you are not yet completely familiar with the world of pomade, then read our article 'The differences between Pomade, Clay, Paste, Wax, Gel and more!'.

What is Pomade on an oil basis?

In the 19th century, pomade was produced from bear fat and lard (pork fat). In the early 1900s, ingredients such as beeswax and petroleum came into the view of the pomade re-mixers.

Now a good pomade also consists of petroleum jelly, beeswax, or lanolin, for example. A variety of other natural (fragrance) components are added to this.

Tip: A good pomade can also provide your hair with the right nutrition and vitamins.

What are the advantages of Pomade on an oil basis?

Oil-Based Pomade has a large fan base worldwide for a reason. This is due to its magical properties to style your hair all day long. That's quite different with gel. The advantage of the relatively wet pomade on an oil basis is that it does not harden. While the hold of this type of pomade is particularly high.

The style of your hair is also not vulnerable if you have to go through the rain, for example. The rainwater won't get this hair styling product out of your hair. So when you stumble back inside like a drenched cat, it's simply a matter of drying off and reshaping your hairstyle.

What are the disadvantages of Pomade on an oil basis?

There are still some disadvantages to the pomade on a petroleum basis. You can only wash this substance out of your hair with a good shampoo. And preferably with warm water. Not too hot, as that is bad for the health of your hair and skin.

When you vigorously use an ordinary shampoo, you also wash away the body's natural oils. This can lead to dry hair and it can also become damaged. The quality of your shampoo is therefore very important.

The various oils in a pomade can also make your skin sensitive to pimples. In that case, stop immediately or experiment with another natural type of pomade.

Good to know: A pomade is not really suitable for thin hair. In that case, styling powder is a better alternative. You can read all about it in 'How to style thinning hair?'.

How do I wash Pomade out of my hair?

You wash the pomade only with a high-quality shampoo from your hair. Preferably wash twice in succession with a little shampoo. This is much more effective than massaging a whole blob of soap into the hair once. Of course, there are special shampoos to remove this product from your hair.

Uppercut Deluxe Degreaser ShampooUppercut Deluxe Degreaser Shampoo

Fortunately, there are excellent shampoos on the market for men who only apply oil pomade to their hair. These are products with ingredients on board that have the function of carefully breaking down the fats.

Types that, in addition to removing the pomade, simultaneously hydrate and nourish your hair with vitamins so that it does not become damaged or brittle. We recommend brands like Uppercut Deluxe and Schmiere for this type of shampoo.

Baxter of California Deep Clean Shampoo

Shampoo for greasy hair

In addition to a pomade shampoo, you can also use shampoos, specifically intended for greasy hair. These hair cleaning products from, among others, Baxter of California have ingredients such as apple cider vinegar, menthol, and ginseng added to remove the bulk of the fats.

In a good quality clarifying shampoo from, for example, Forte Series, there are no parabens, sulfates, or other chemicals.

Reuzel Scrub Shampoo

After a session with this product, your hair and scalp feel fresh, grease-free, and healthy again, but for scrub, it also applies: do not use too often. Once a week is sufficient.

Grooming of hair after removing Pomade

After washing the pomade out of your hair with one of these products above, we recommend giving your hairstyle the right aftercare by using a nice conditioner or a good hair oil.

Conditioner

Use a good conditioner after cleaning your hair. Purely to give your hairstyle those extra vitamin shots. Preferably a rich/creamy conditioner so you can nourish and hydrate the hair down to the cuticles and roots.

Purely to prevent dry and damaged hair. If you then choose to massage in a pomade, make sure you only choose the natural and artisanal versions.

Hair Oil

If there is one product that softens, nourishes, and makes the hair shine healthily, it is hair oil. Of course, the natural versions such as Castor Oil or the rare argan oil. There are actually no better natural products to optimally care for damaged/dry hair and the irritated underlying skin.

If you have never used such a good hair & skin-supporting oil for the hair, we really recommend trying it. For example, massage it into the hair before going to sleep. When you wake up, your hairstyle feels very resilient, supple, and healthy!

Finally

Before we forget: never use a detergent to remove oil-based pomade or other hair care products. This will cause the cuticles to open wide, and you will lose all your natural nourishment that protects your hair in one go.

Hopefully, we have guided you more by a: using the best pomades and b: removing these products with the right shampoos. Then it will always be fine!

Oh yes, last tip? Check out our article on ‘6 cool homebrewed pomades’ and read about the differences. If you want to massage the best pomade into your hair, you can't ignore these brands.

Good luck.
