What to do about dandruff and flakes on the scalp

Wat te doen bij roos en schilfers op de hoofdhuid

Almost every man will have to deal with it at some point in his life. It is the most common problem on the scalp of men. We are, of course, talking about dandruff. For many men, it is very embarrassing. Especially when you wear dark Apparel. Although it doesn't seem very pleasant, it is quite harmless.

A big misconception about a flaky scalp is that it would have to do with hygiene. That someone suffers from dandruff doesn't necessarily say anything about the hygiene of the Hair or the scalp. That it looks unappealing is something else. Fortunately, dandruff is one of the easiest conditions to treat and prevent. Let's start with where and how it originates.

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is another word for dead skin cells. Now this doesn't sound very pleasant. However, it is a very natural process, our skin renews itself over and over again.

From the bottom of the skin, dead skin cells are replaced by new healthy skin cells. This process takes about 2 to 3 weeks, but in people with dandruff, this process goes faster, resulting in excessive production of skin flakes. We call this dandruff.

How do scalp flakes occur?

The cause of the acceleration of this process can vary. It can be genetically determined, but also related to eczema-like complaints.

Seborrheic eczema is caused by a yeast that is naturally present in the skin. You recognize this form of eczema by flakes, for example, around the eyebrows. Stress can also influence this process, as can the weather, due to differences in warmth, cold, dryness, and moisture.

Flakes on the scalp don't immediately mean you have dandruff

Sometimes it seems like you have dandruff because you have flakes. This is not always immediately dandruff or excessive production of new skin cells. It may also be due to an excess of styling products being used, leaving a residue in the Hair that causes flakes. Not rinsing out the Shampoo properly can also cause itching and flakes.

What can you do against dandruff?

Using an anti-dandruff product is, of course, step one. Make sure it is a product without (or with a minimal amount of) silicones. A Anti-Dandruff Shampoo or a calming Shampoo is recommended. This will not only reduce the dandruff but also calm the scalp.

Washing your Hair every day is also not good. Too much stimulation of the scalp can actually cause more irritation and itching, which leads to more flakes. If you want to refresh your Hair, you can also use Dry Shampoo. Additionally, we advise against drying or styling your Hair with a Hair Dryer. Heat dries out, causing the flakes to worsen. It is also recommended to rinse the Hair well with lukewarm water after washing, so that all Styling and Shampoo residues are rinsed out of the Hair.

Is your scalp calm and the flaky scalp under control? Then do not continue using the Anti-Dandruff Shampoo daily. Switch to a Shampoo that cares for the Hair and the scalp, and optionally use the Anti-Dandruff Shampoo once a week to keep the scalp calm. This is to prevent any recurrence of dandruff on your scalp. A well-cared-for skin is well-hydrated and will therefore be less likely to become dry and itchy, remaining dandruff-free.

Is dandruff dangerous?

Generally, dandruff is a fairly harmless condition that you can quickly get rid of. In exceptional cases, it is advisable to contact your doctor. Visit when you:

  • Have an inflamed and very sensitive scalp due to scratching
  • Experience Hair Loss in addition to dandruff
  • Start getting flakes on other parts of your Body
  • See no improvement after treatment

But again, in many cases, no panic! It's a matter of a well-working Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and you're good to go.
