What is a toner? And why are toners so important?

Wat is een toner? En waarom zijn toners zo belangrijk?

It could be that you have maintained a clear facial routine for years. From cleansing & exfoliating to massaging in a night cream.

Applying a modern toner properly hydrates the skin with the goal of: locking the necessary and just applied moisture with a toner into the skin with a good day cream. In addition to hydration, a toner also has the task of soothing the skin, making the face radiant, keeping it clean and making pores invisible.

So it's also especially important for you to include a toner in your routine. Want to buy a good toner? Take a peek at our digital showcase.

What is a toner?

A toner is a hydrator in liquid form. The second step in your facial routine. That is, after applying a cleanser. Toners usually contain active acidic components. The 2 main ones: glycolic acid and salicylic acid (read our skincare dictionary for a detailed explanation). Furthermore, modern toners also contain the right vitamins so that your skin is nourished.

Notethat a modern toner contains only good ingredients such as antioxidants and nourishing vitamins and no alcohol. This is because this agent actually dehydrates.

What is the function of toner?

Toner is primarily the finishing touch for cleansing your facial skin. All the remaining dirty residue is removed from your face. This ensures that pores are not clogged and prevents a dull glow.

Contemporary toners also protect your skin's pH level. Optimally moisturize the skin so you provide the moisture with flexible armor with our best day cream. Purpose: the moisture does not evaporate from the skin so your face remains continuously hydrated.

Another advantage is that you armor your skin against bad (weather) influences from outside. Because of the hydration, pollution is more easily shed and does not penetrate your skin.

Is toner suitable for all skin types?

Yes. For oily or medium skin, a good toner will remove as much of the excess oil and sebum as possible. For dry to normal skin, a modern toner can make irritations and redness disappear.

A toner is not just another step but an essential move to literally keep your skin in shape.

Which toners shouldn't you use?

Basically, there are 2 types of toners on the market that you should steer clear of:

  • Toners with alcohol on board should never land in your bathroom. They often also have other ingredients in them that will irritate the skin.
  • Water-based toners with non-natural pungent perfume may smell nice and seem invigorating but often cause discomfort. These toners usually guarantee irritated skin.

Toner benefits

It cleanses and nourishes the skin in 1 go. In addition to all the benefits already mentioned above, a good toner also provides a load of antioxidants. In addition, your skin is treated to a generous serving of soothing moisturizers. So a high-end toner ensures a smooth skin surface.

By the way, a good serum can't hurt either.

Difference hydrating vs moisturizing

A hydrator and a moisturizer. These terms are often mixed up. But there is definitely a difference between the two.

  • With a hydrator, you bring moisture to the facial skin. This can be done with glycerin, for example. These types of ingredients cause water to bind to your skin. This also makes your skin better able to absorb moisture.
  • A moisturizer is often a cream that helps retain moisture in the skin through the oils it contains. Especially with dry or aging skin, the natural lipid (oil) barrier does not work optimally, so the skin loses moisture. With a moisturizer, you can prevent this from happening.

Tip: Apply a moisturizer to damp skin as soon as possible after you apply your toner. Skin cells are aquatic animals. Without moisture, they die. Applying a moist toner to your skin is the water-rich oxygen it needs to survive.

If you put on a good moisturizer immediately after applying the toner and within a minute, this way you keep the necessary moisture where it needs to be. In the skin.

Last tip: Moisture evaporates incredibly quickly. Especially in the winter when it's freezing. So apply both the toner and your day cream in a still steaming bathroom. You'll see that it works.

In conclusion

If you want to keep your skin in as good a condition as possible, you can't avoid using a good moisturizing toner. Think of it as that 1.5 liters of water you need to drink a day to keep your body running.

Facial skin has a hard time regulating itself. Especially due to outside influences. Poorly functioning climate systems, (dry) climate and pollution. With an alcohol-free toner in your skincare routine, you arm the skin (cells) and keep your skin fresh and hydrated. Not only will you look vibrant. It feels TOP, too!
