Pomade

Pomade is the most popular hair product for men in the Netherlands. With a Pomade, you ensure that your Hair stays well-styled, allowing you to create many hairstyles with this fine product.

Since the beginning of this decennium, we have seen Pomade reappear on the streets, and it seems stronger than ever. The rise of various Pomades is caused by the Barbers of Schorem (Reuzel). They are partly responsible for the reintroduction of Pomade in the Netherlands. With Reuzel Pomade as our national pride, Pomade is now the most popular hair product in the Netherlands.

What is Pomade?

Pomade is an ancient product that can give your Hair a sleek, styled look. With a Pomade, you will be able to style your Hair effortlessly into the most challenging hairstyles like a quiff, slick back, or a sharp side part.

If you've ever asked yourself, “what does a Pomade do?”, here is the answer: it styles and tightens your Hair, ensuring your hairstyle stays neatly in place all day. By Ordering a Pomade, you can be sure that your Hair stays controlled and styled throughout the day.

The origin of Pomades

The word Pomade comes from the French word apple. This is because the early skin fats had this characteristic scent of this type of fruit. Pomade is originally a fat Hair product that saw its major rise at the beginning of the 21st century. Those shiny hairstyles from the 1920s to the 1950s; that is Pomade. Pomade has never disappeared from the hairdressing world since then.

What types of Pomades are there?

A Pomade prevents your Hair from falling apart into loose strands. Today, you can find Pomade in two main types: Oil-Based Pomade and Water-Based Pomade.

Pomade oil-based

This is the classic among the Pomades, the Pomade oil-based for ultimate shine and Hold without becoming hard. According to stories, this Pomade was previously made from animal fat, preferably from a pig (pork fat is called Reuzel).

The big advantage of this type of Pomade is that it does not dry out in your Hair and therefore does not become hard. Your Hair stays well-styled for days and is very easy to restyle. Pomade oil-based provides plenty of shine, and you can easily achieve that deep wet look typical of any classic Pompadour. The disadvantage of Pomade oil-based: washing it out is almost impossible.

Pomade water-based

The more modern version is the Pomade water-based. This type of Hair Styling comes quite close to the Pomade oil-based and has a significant advantage over the Oil-Based Pomade. The Pomade water-based is easy to wash out. The Pomades water-based does dry out a bit but does not become hard; at least not as hard as the traditional Styling Hair Gel. Additionally, they have a nice shine.

If you go for the deep wet look shine, then a Water-Based Pomade is not very suitable. As it dries out a bit, the wet look shine fades, in contrast to a Pomade oil-based. The Pomade water-based is a beautiful alternative and comes very close to the oil-based in terms of properties.

How do I use a Pomade?

Always start with dry or towel-dried Hair. A Pomade works best if you warm it up a bit between your Hands. Take a small amount of Pomade from the tin and apply it to your palm. Then rub the Pomade warm between your palms before applying it to your Hair. Once the Pomade is warmed up a bit, you can now apply and distribute it over your entire Hair. You can now start styling your hair. You can do this with your Hands for a more natural look, or go for styling a sleek look with a comb or brush. If you Brands that you have used too little Pomade, take some more and warm it between your palms again. Depending on your Pomade, your look will become smooth or matte.

The difference between Pomade and Hair Wax

Pomade is, just like a Hair Clay, Hair Paste or Hair Wax, truly its own product. Many people would like to compare a Pomade with other products, but they are separate from each other. The difference between a Pomade and Hair Wax, for example, is that a Hair Wax will dry more in your Hair. Each product has its own charms and effects, so with a Hair Wax, Hair Cream or Hair Gel, you will not achieve the same result as with a Pomade.

Which Pomade should I use?

This answer differs per person. For every look, there is a suitable Pomade to be found. Do you want a natural look? Then choose a Pomade with a light Hold or a medium Hold. Are you looking for a stronger Pomade to keep your look in place through weather and wind? Then you better choose a strong Hold or even an extra strong Hold.

Is Pomade good for your Hair?

A Pomade is not bad for your Hair. However, it varies per Pomade whether it can actually give a boost to your Hair. We always recommend getting a product with as many natural ingredients as possible. These ingredients not only ensure that your Hair stays in shape, but also that your hair and scalp are well cared for and hydrated.

What is the best Pomade?

This answer will differ per person. For example, you have Pomades that are more suitable for men with thick Hair, thin Hair, curly Hair, dull Hair, etc. You also need to think about whether you want a shiny Pomade or a matte Pomade.

Of course, there are Pomades that are by far the most popular. Think of a Pomade from Brands like Layrite, Uppercut Deluxe, Suavecito and Reuzel.
