Razor
There are several ways to Shaving yourself, and therefore there are also many different Razors available. Some Razors provide a smoother result than others. At The Alpha Men, we sell Razors from the best Brands for both the beginner and the advanced shaver!
What types of Razors are there?
Razors come in different types and sizes. There are different holders for the blades, and there are different types of blades (open razor, closed razor).
Cartridge Razor
The Cartridge Razor is the razor known to most men. This type of razor is easily available in supermarkets or drugstores. With a cartridge razor, you use a holder where you can continuously place new blades. Often, this is a blade with multiple small blades in it. This way of Shaving requires the least technique and is therefore used by many men.
A disadvantage of Shaving with a cartridge razor is that this method of Shaving provides the least smooth result and you have a higher chance of irritation because it pulls the hairs more than it cuts them. For men who do not have sensitive skin and do not quickly suffer from wounds, this method of Shaving may be sufficient. In the long run, this method of Shaving is also more costly because the replaceable blades are more expensive than those of, for example, a Safety Razor.
Safety Razor
The Safety Razor is a classic holder where you can place a blade. These blades are razor-sharp, and the holder secures the blade so that you don't easily cut yourself. Most men who use a Safety Razor engage in wet Shaving. This razor truly cuts the hairs and causes less irritation than a Cartridge Razor does. Also, the blades are cheaper. The Safety Razor itself is often a slightly more expensive but one-time investment. Read in our blog about the Safety Razor why we recommend this method of Shaving!
Shavette
The Shavette is an alternative to an open razor (called Straight Razor), which has replaceable blades so you don't have to sharpen them yourself. This saves a lot of work and makes it more attractive for beginners to master Shaving with an open razor! The blade is not entirely the same as the Straight Razor, because the texture of the edge is different and less friendly to the skin than a Straight Razor. It requires some practice but delivers a very smooth result!
Straight Razor
The Straight Razor is also called an “open razor” and is the authentic razor with which the best shaving result can be achieved. The blade must be polished and sharpened repeatedly, which requires some technique. Once you master this, this method of Shaving brings a lot of pleasure! Many barbers use an open razor because it provides the best result for the customer and is truly authentic Shaving.
What is the difference between a closed razor and a Open Comb?
Closed Combs is the most common type you encounter. This type of comb is therefore very suitable for beginner shavers. With a closed razor, there is a continuous guide at the end of the Base Plate that guides the blade over the skin. This means the skin is less exposed to the blade, and the chance of cutting yourself is much smaller! For a normal Beard Growth, a Closed Comb is perfectly adequate.
A Open Comb, on the other hand, does not have this protective continuous guide. The Base Plate ends in a sort of teeth. With an open razor, the chance of cuts is therefore greater, but there is also a big advantage! Men with heavier Beard Growth benefit more from a Open Comb than from a Closed Comb. A Open Comb exposes a much larger part of the blade to the skin, resulting in a much smoother finish.
Which razor should I buy?
The best way to Shaving your Face is with a suitable razor. Now that you know more about the different types of Razors, the suitability per Beard Growth, and the differences between a closed and a Open Comb, you are probably wondering which razor is best for you. The best type of razor for you also depends on your Skin Type and your Beard Growth.
Razor for sensitive skin
Do you have sensitive skin? Then we recommend going for a Safety Razor with Closed Comb. A Safety Razor might be a more expensive purchase than a Cartridge Razor, but it will last much longer! You only need to replace the blade when you notice it becoming less effective.
Do you have sensitive skin but heavy Beard Growth? Then you can still choose a razor with a Open Comb, but make sure to read up on it beforehand and use the right Shaving Products such as a good Shaving Soap, from which you can whip up a nice thick foam.
Razor for normal skin
Is your skin not easily irritated and do you not get cuts easily? Then it's entirely up to you how you want to Shaving. Don't want to spend too much time on it? A Cartridge Razor will suffice in this case.
Want to go the authentic route and are you willing to take the time? Then choosing an open razor might be the right choice for you!
Razor for heavy Beard
A razor and Beard go hand in hand. If you have heavy Beard Growth, you will need to Shaving your Face more often. We speak of heavy Beard Growth when you have thick and hard beard hairs, the shaved beard hairs quickly cast a 'shadow' on your Face, and the hair growth is rapid.
When you have heavy Beard Growth, you need different tools than when you have light Beard Growth. After all, you have twice as much (or twice as thick) Hair to Shaving. The best option is therefore a Safety Razor or an open razor. These can better handle the resistance offered by heavy Beard Growth. In the Top 10 Safety Razors you will find the best selection for heavy Beard Growth.

What is the best razor?
This answer naturally varies from person to person. You should keep in mind what Skin Type and what type of Beard Growth you have. Every man also has his own preferences in terms of durability, Price, Sharpness, function, etc. Do you find the environment important, for example? Then a Safety Razor or Shavette might suit you well, because they are very sustainable. Are you looking for a razor for the Body of the man or just for Beard Growth? All these topics influence the choice of your best razor.
