What is a Razor Strop?

A Razor Strop (also known as a strop) is a belt on which you can sharpen your straight razor. A Razor Strop has two sides, namely a leather side and a canvas side. With the canvas side, you ensure that all metal particles align in the same direction. This is also known as "honing" (more on this later). After honing, you polish your blade on the leather side. This makes your blade smooth and comfortable to use.

How do you use a Razor Strop?

1. When you want to start using your Razor Strop, you must first hang it somewhere. You can do this, for example, on a hook or the door handle in the Bathroom.
2. You hold the other end of the Razor Strop yourself. It is important that there is tension on the Razor Strop because it should not bend. If you let your Razor Strop bend too much, your straight razor will not move smoothly on the Razor Strop. You will not get the desired result.
3. Hold your straight razor between your thumb and index finger and lay it flat on the Razor Strop.
4. Then move your straight razor from bottom to top over the Razor Strop.
5. Have you reached the top of the Razor Strop with your blade? Great, then turn your blade over and gently move it back down.

Honing

Use the canvas side of your Razor Strop to hone. Honing means aligning all the metal particles in the same direction on your straight razor. Run your razor about 15 times over the canvas side to ensure the metal particles are aligned.

Polishing

Now use the leather side of your Razor Strop to polish your straight razor. This way, your razor becomes smooth and extremely comfortable to Shaving with. Run your blade about 20 to 25 times over the leather side.

What else do I need to sharpen my blade?

To maintain your Razor Strop, it is important to use a paste. A yellow paste for a Razor Strop is greasy and specially made for the maintenance and Grooming of the leather side of your Razor Strop. The white paste for a Razor Strop is made for the canvas side. This paste cleans the canvas side after use and ensures that your Razor Strop lasts longer.

When you have directed and polished your knife, you can use a strop. This strap also has two sides, one side is Brown and the other side is colored. When the colored side is Red, it is specially for sharpening silver steel or carbon open razors. When the colored side is Green, it is specially for sharpening stainless steel open razors. The strop is used in the same way as a Razor Strop. You use a strop occasionally when your razor needs extra sharpening. Consider directing as step 1, polishing as step 2, and sharpening as step 3.

When should you use a Razor Strop?

You use a Razor Strop when you notice that your once sharp razor is no longer as sharp. This can be after several shaves, but the number of shaves varies per razor. You will feel yourself when your razor is due for maintenance.
