Dry skin

What causes dry skin?

One of the functions of our skin is to protect us from external substances and moisture. The outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, consists of tightly packed layers of dead cells and is surrounded by fats (lipids). The stratum corneum resembles a brick wall, where cells form the bricks and fats form the cement. Together they create a barrier through which only a small amount of water can pass. In the case of dry skin, the barrier is damaged, causing the skin to lose more moisture and become dry.
