Shavette
The shavette, also known as a 'barber razor', can give any man the perfect shave, provided you want to learn the technique. A shavette is not a disposable razor or a razor that you can buy at the local drugstore. What the shavette is, is a classic, luxurious real razor. It's no wonder that the shavette is a favorite among connoisseurs and barbers.
What is a shavette?
The shavette was launched on the market by the brand Dovo. Back then, the razor was called a "replaceable straight razor". This means that the shavette belongs to the open razors with replaceable razor blades. Brand your blade becomes dull? No problem, the blade can be easily replaced.
Shavettes are also called barber razors because most barbers work with this open razor. They use it to neatly trim the contours of your beard, as well as the sideburns and hairs on the neck. Additionally, the blades can be replaced after each customer. Great for hygiene.
A shavette razor can also be excellently used at home to give yourself an extremely tight and smooth shaving. Unlike the authentic open razor, you don't need to sharpen a shavette barber razor. A shavette has a holder where you load single edge blades blades. You can also use double edge blades by simply breaking them and using half. This also gives you a much wider choice from a large collection of razor blades.
Thanks to the replaceable razor blades, you are always provided with optimal sharpness. If you learn the right technique, it won't be a problem to shaving yourself as neatly as at the barber. With the least chance of irritation.
How do you use a shavette?
Unfold the barber razor and you're ready to shaving. Brand your barber razor becomes dull after a few shaves? Then you can replace the blade without any problem. Handy! Because with some razors, you need to sharpen your blade again, requiring you to get certain sharpening products at home. This will not be the case with a Shavette.
A shavette is a serious razor and razor-sharp in use. It is therefore recommended to keep the barber razor closed when not in use. This is to prevent accidents. You should also not drop a Shavette barber razor, as a piece of the blade can easily break off. Then you need to replace the blade immediately.
To make it completely easy for yourself, you can also buy a shavette kit from us. It contains everything you need to shaving yourself as neatly as at the barber.
Shavette shaving routine:
Before you shaving, wash your face with some warm water, so the pores open and the beard hairs stand up. A hot shower is perfect. Then, preferably use authentic shaving soap. For example, choose from our top 10 best shaving soaps.
After lathering, hold the unfolded shavette between three fingers and keep it at a 30-degree angle to the skin. Hold the shaving blade horizontally with the edge facing downwards. You should keep the skin a bit taut with your hand to achieve the optimal result.
Then, move the shaving blade from top to bottom and cut along the direction of the hair. In between, rinse the razor clean to wash away soap residues. Continue this process until the desired result is achieved.
After you are done, rinse your face clean again and you can optionally use a aftershave balm to soothe the skin.

What shaving products do you use with Shavettes?
Your skin will naturally be happy with you once you use good products when it comes to shaving with a shavette. We recommend first using the best preshave. Like our curated top 10 best preshave.
Before using the shaving soap, it is comfortable to first apply shaving oil to your skin. With these lubricants, the shavette goes through like a (barber) knife through warm butter. We also recommend using a good shaving gel. Choose one from our extensive collection shaving gel. Not to be confused with the shaving gel you get at the supermarket, by the way. Those standard cans contain far too few fats or oils to allow you to shaving comfortably and without irritation.
What is the difference between a shavette and a classic open razor?
They look very similar. But there is indeed a difference between a shavette and the classic open razor, also known as straight razor. The big difference is that a straight razor consists of a fixed blade. This blade needs to be regularly sharpened with a sharpening stone. True straight razors are the hardcore razors and are also somewhat more expensive than shavettes.
Another major difference between these razor-sharp blades is that an open blade shaves less aggressively than a shavette. The design and composition of an open blade are such that it glides more softly over the skin.
Shaving with a classic open blade naturally also requires the right technique so that you don't get shaving cuts, but due to the specific design of the blade itself, it shaves somewhat more tolerably than a shavette.
The disadvantage of an open razor can be that you have to sharpen it in a certain way, while after 7 to 8 shaves you provide a shavette with a brand new blade. There is a great diversity of razor blades that you can experiment with to find your best combination.
