Beard trimming: everything you need to know

Baard trimmen: alles wat je moet weten

There are men who look at their best with a wild, unkempt beard that goes in all directions. If you are completely happy with such a natural Odesten: Good for You! For the majority of the gentlemen, however, it applies that occasional trimming itself trimming (or allowing beard) gives a nicer, more attractive and more practical result.

A wrong way with trimming can quickly undo your beard growth for a few weeks. Do you not want to shave your beard? Then make sure you don't bite you out of your beard. If you want to be sure that you will get a top result, make the chance of accidents as small as possible and read in.

Most people know what the difference is between shaving and trimming, but we still explain it briefly. When you trim, you wick your hair a bit shorter. Not "to the skin short" as a razor does. If you trim your beard, you have a nice well -groomed beard at the end. Are you going to shave? Then you no longer have a beard.

If you know what you are doing with trimming, you can enjoy a symmetrical and maintained beard and work towards your desired end result faster. Read the process step by step below.

Why trim your beard?

Trimming your beard is important for several reasons. It not only ensures a neat, well -kept look, but also keeps your beard healthy. By regularly trimming you remove split ends and prevent dirt and leftovers from accumulating. In short, trimming your beard helps you look good and feel good!

Step 1: Preparation

The best preparation for a good grooming is to first take a shower. That ensures that your pores are open wide. This will make shaving your cheeks and neckline much easier. Clean your beard with a beard shampoo, this makes it easier to shave the hair. In this way the beard trimmer or the scissors slides smoother through the hair, without continuing to crochet in dried hair. Prefer not to use beard oil, because it reduces the grip of your tools on the hair.

Step 2: Brushing your beard

Now you will brush your beard with a beard brush. If all hairs are more or less the same direction, you get a more balanced result and it is easier to cut and trim. Do you prefer to use a comb? Then use a wooden or metals beard comb, these don't make your hair static.

Step 3: Trimming your beard

Then it's time to grab the trimmer. Make sure you determine in advance which length your beard should get. Do not immediately put your beard trimmer on the stand, but start with a stand that you think is about as long as your beard hair - and see what effect your beard trimming has on this position. This way you can estimate how much length the trimmer removes from your beard.

Most men use a longer length on their chin and a shorter on their cheeks. This is how you make a natural, downward beard model. Which position you use on your whiskers depends on the beard model where you want to work.

Pay attention if you use a new beard trimmer. The positions of each trimmer are different - if your position 3 used with your old trimmer, you can come home from a cold funfair if you do the same with your new device.

Always make sure your beard is dry. Humid beard hairs are longer than dry beard hairs! Then you should definitely not trim them. The result may be that you suddenly trim your beard too short.

How do you use a trimmer?

Take the charged trimmer in your hand and put the headroom in the stand you want and start trimming. Are you trim for the first time? Then put it on the longest position so that you can first see what effect you get. During the beard trimming you can shorten the trim setting until you have reached the desired position.

If you remove the storage comb, you can easily remove edges of your beard with the sharp teeth of your trimmer so that you can give the finishing touch with your razor afterwards.

NB! You have to think carefully about the correct length of your beard. Trim you too short, you are weeks further before the beard is back on the level. So caution is important. That is why the memory support below is very handy:

  • Short Beard: 3 mm - 10 mm
  • Long beard: 10 mm - 40+ mm

Tips at Baard Trimming

Shave against hair growth: Trim with your beard trimmer against the hair growth of your beard upwards. This way you grab the entire beard and make sure you broke -bear fluently into your beard.

Provide sharp material: You must have shaved with a bone knife or shaver. Then you know how annoying that was and how much effort it took. Bearded hairs are made of keratin - the same material from which your nails are structured. So sturdy stuff. It is therefore very important to use sharp tools for trimming the beard. A good beard scissors stays sharp for a long time, the blades of your trimmer do not remain: they wear pretty quickly, especially if you update your beard (almost) daily. You should certainly replace the knives of the trimmer every six months (preferably every three months).

Step 4: Cut mustaches and loose hairs

What do you use such bearded scissors Well? To start with the bottom of your mustache neatly straight. That is a job for which you need good control - don't get to work too enthusiastically. Also, scissors are usually sharper than a beard trimmer, so that you quickly cut the wobbly hairs on your upper lip in half.

You also use the scissors to cut hair that remain after the trim. You know, those stubborn hairs who go over your beard after three times still don't want to be shortened. No point - with the sharp beard scissors those hairs have disappeared in no time.

Step 5: Trim your neck

A fake beard is more often a swear than a sought -after beard style. You will probably want to shave the bottom of your chin and your neck completely bald. For this you use a shaver or trimmer, or better yet, a razor.

A good height at which you shave your beard at the bottom lies between three points. Stand in front of the mirror and imagine a round line in that runs from ear to ear. In the middle, this line, one to three fingers thick, crosses above your Adam's apple. Of course the precise line depends on the beard model that you have in mind.

Carefully shave the bottom of your beard and try to keep the line as straight as possible. Regularly check in the mirror whether your work is still symmetrical - but do not go wild when you go skewed. Before you know it you shave your beard above your jaw line, and then it will be howling.

You can also try to play with the different positions or attachments of your trimmer and make a natural, gradual transition from your beard to your bald neck. That requires some practice, but can give a very nice result. Do you really want such a transition, but don't have the skills to make it yourself? Then a trip to the barber is a must!

Step 6: Shaving your cheek line

Also on your cheeks you limit your beard with a shave. For that you use the same tools as for your neck, so a beard trimmer, shaver or razor With gel or foam - which works best for you, you have to find out yourself.

Even now you draw an imaginary line in the mirror. Where it lies depends on the result that you have in mind. Carefully shave and make that straight or curved line. Here too, you can try to make a transition with different positions of your trimmer or shaver.

Beard Shaper

Step 7: Your beard contours with a beardshaper

Update your beard to perfection? Baardhappers can help you to get your beard nicer and easier in shape. Especially for the two difficult chores above (neck and cheek line), a beardshaper can give a much nicer result than if you get to work from the wrist.

You choose a beardshaper with a shape that matches the desired beard line. Many shapers have several sides, so you can also alternate if your beard grows further. Keep the shaper in the right place with one hand, and use your other hand to trim the beard along the shaper.

Step 8: Round the trim turn

After trimming, first remove loose hairs from the trimmer, so that they cannot bone further. Then you simply clean the beard trimmer under the warm tap and let it dry well. Remove any attachments first.

You comb your beard or wipe clean with a soft brush from loose hair. By combing or brushing again you can also see if there are hairs that you have to update with the scissors.

Finally, you do some skin and beard care. You relax your facial skin by rinsing or dabbing it with cold water. That closes the pores again and prevents irritation due to sharp blades. You can also (again) with a moisturizing aftershave Treat to prevent irritation (the notorious "Barber's Rash).

Carefully rubbing your beard with beard oil ensures the last point of perfection. With that you give the short -wicked hair and the slightly plowed hair follicles the food they need. Moreover, beard oil makes your hairs smoother, making it easier to treat with the next groom.

How often do you have to trim your beard?

How often you have to trim your beard really depends on how fast your beard grows and what look you want to achieve. Some people find it necessary to slightly cut their beard once or twice a week to maintain a neatly cared for look. Others who want a fuller beard can suffice with a thorough trim once every two to three weeks. It is especially important to listen to your beard and trim when it is necessary to maintain the health and desired style of your beard.
