Choose a scent for men
To immediately help a misunderstanding out the world, you generally choose when you are going to buy a scent, never for an aftershave. An aftershave is only intended for after shaving as the name literally says. It closes the pores and immediately disinfect the skin. Yes, an aftershave can smell nice but contains so few odor components that you will soon no longer smell them. And in that sense is actually the essential difference between all other species, namely the percentage of odor components that contains a scent.
Concentration of perfume makes the difference between eau de cologne, eau de toilette and eau de perfume
Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum all contain perfume. The difference is in concentration. Each scent is made on the basis of a perfume and is then diluted with water or alcohol. For how much this scent is ultimately diluted, the percentage of perfume that is in the odor and therefore also what name is given to it. An eau de cologne, eau de toilette and an eau de perfume could therefore have the same scent but differ in strength.
Eau de cologne
The Eau de Cologne is the least strong perfume and contains a concentration of 2-3% in perfume. This scent fades fairly quickly and can no longer be smelled after a maximum of two hours.
An Eau de Cologne is one of the oldest types of perfumes that in, for example, the 60s and 70s was the only thing men used to smell. Nowadays, Eau de Cologne is a lot less known and popular than Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum.
Eau de toilette
The eau de toilette is very popular and contains 5-10% in perfume. This is a bit stronger in scent than Eau de Cologne and continues to smell a little longer. Eau de toilette is fairly affordable and therefore also very popular. There is a lot of choice for men looking for a scent. You will not continue to smell an eau de toilette all day and will therefore have to be sprayed a little more often. You can smell an eau de toilette for about three hours. Perfect for men looking for a scent but do not like strong perfumes.
Eau de Parfum
In general the strongest variant of the regular perfumes. Eau de Parfum contains a concentration of 10-20% in perfume. Some variants remain noticeable for up to eight hours. It is also the most popular variant. It is often considerably more expensive than eau de toilette due to the higher concentration. You therefore need less of it to smell nice and therefore a bit more durable depending on how much you use of course.
Perfume
In addition to Eau de Parfum, there is also simply perfume. With a concentration of 20-40%, this is the strongest odor form that you can get. It is therefore the most expensive variant. It is noticeable for up to 24 hours and cannot be sprayed because it is less diluted. Perfume is dripping on the skin. You only need a few drops to smell strong all day.
Construction of scents in perfume
The perfume concentrations we are talking about are of course all mixes of different stuff. Each perfume consists of notes that can be divided into three groups:
Top notes
The top notes are the scents that you smell when you apply a perfume to your skin. The first impression. The scents that distinguish a perfume for you from another. These scents dominate a few minutes and have disappeared the fastest. Typical top notes are citrus, bergamot, lavender and lemongrass.
Heart notes
You start to smell the heart notes when the top notes have disappeared. Usually after about 10 minutes. It is seen as the most important part of a perfume. Typical heart notes are jasmine, roses, apple, raspberry, cinnamon and pepper.
Notes
These scents remain the latter and you continue to smell the longest. These nuts are the foundation of the scent. Typical base notes are cedar wood, vanilla and sandalwood.
Smell
Finally, you can still categorize all the scents in the different nuts in floral, oriental, fresh and woody.
How you use a perfume best
Did you know that your skin has a certain pH value and that a perfume on your skin smells a little different than on someone else's skin? This way your skin also determines how long a perfume continues to smell. That is why smelling a perfume on a piece of paper is never the best way to choose a perfume. There is a good chance that it will smell different on your skin.
Of course you can't change anything about that. Yet you can get the most out of a smell if you use perfume in the right way. We give you some tips.
Spray perfume, dab or rub?
Sprayen is the answer! Rubbing or dabbing can break the molecules of the scents and therefore the scent disappears. Spray on your skin from about 20 centimeters away. Let the perfume withdraw.
Spray perfume in the right place and leave your clothes alone
Perfume is activated by heat and chemical reactions. Spraying on your clothing is therefore of little use. Moreover, it is bad for your clothes. Spray the perfume preferably after showering before you dress. Your pores are also open so that the scents are properly absorbed by the skin. The best places where your perfume can bring are places where you can feel your heart rate. The best places are therefore mainly on sleep, behind the earlobe, the throat, the inside of the wrist and the elbow.
Do not use too much perfume
We know, the temptation is to spray some extra perfume. Sometimes you think the perfume no longer smells because you don't smell anything anymore. This is not true. Your brain gets used to the scent that makes you no longer smell it after a while. Other people still smell this. So don't spray too much.
