Knowing what skin type you have is essential to getting healthy skin and keeping it in good health! It is also very important to know what type of skin you have so that you know exactly what skin care products to get in the house.
This way, you can create a routine that is best for your skin! In this article we are going to talk about the different skin types, how to determine your skin type and which products are best for your skin!
What skin types are there?
Everyone has their own skin type. You can place your skin under one or more types. What skin types there are, we have explained below for you:
Dry skin
Do you experience taut or even itchy skin after showering? Does your face feel dry and flaky and can you hardly see your pores? Then your skin falls under the chapped type. Dry skin can be caused by the skin's inability to produce sufficient oil and therefore cannot maintain the moisture balance (sufficiently).
As a result, dry skin can also become more quickly irritated and look red. In dehydrated skin, wrinkles and lines also become visible more quickly due to dryness.
You can recognize dry skin by the following symptoms:
- Sensitive
- Rough, dull skin
- Red patches
- Chapped or tight feeling
- Itching
- Flakes
Oily skin
Is your skin shiny, does it feel greasy and do you sometimes suffer from pimples? Then chances are you have excessively oily skin. This is caused by the glands in your skin producing too much oil, which can be a result of a certain diet, hormonal fluctuations or even genetics. The excess sebum blocks your pores, so your skin also tends to develop blackheads because of this.
You can recognize oily skin by the following symptoms:
- Shiny and oily skin
- Large pores
- Pale skin color
- Acne, blackheads and/or pimples
Combination skin
Combination skin often means that your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) is oilier than your cheeks, but it can also be the other way around. You also have areas on your face that may be normal, or slightly on the dry side. In other words, a combination.
You can recognize combination skin by the following symptoms:
- Shiny, oily T-zone
- Large pores in this area
- Occasional blackheads and/or pimples
Sensitive skin
Sensitive skin will quickly become irritated when exposed to too much sun or when using the wrong skin care products. Also, sensitive skin often looks unsettled and red spots are visible. Sensitive skin can be dry and is very sensitive to weather changes partly because of this.
You can recognize sensitive skin by the following symptoms:
- Quickly irritated skin
- Burning and tightness
- Dry and chapped areas
- Itching
- Skin reacts quickly to skin care products
- Redness after showering
Aging skin
Aging skin is caused by the effects of aging. As you age, your skin will become drier and thinner, this causes wrinkles to form. There is no exact age at which you can label your skin as an aging skin type. The skin aging process also depends a lot on your skin condition, lifestyle and skin care routines. Generally, skin aging occurs between the ages of 35 and 40.
You can recognize aging skin by the following symptoms:
- Frail, sagging and thin skin
- Large pores
- Wrinkles and lines
- Pale and dull
- Pigmentation spots
- Puffiness and dark circles
Normal skin
Are you reading this article and thinking to yourself, "I don't recognize my skin in this at all," then you're in luck! Your skin falls under the normal skin type. You do not suffer from dryness and your face never feels very oily. And although you may get a spot here and there, you have never suffered from acne. Lucky you!
You can recognize normal skin by the following symptoms:
- Fresh and even skin
- Fine pores
- No or few blemishes
- Not sensitive
- Soft and smooth texture
How do I determine my skin type?
It is common for people to have to place their skin not under one, but several skin types. Their skin is simply a combination of several types. But how do you actually determine your skin type?
1. The Bare-Face Method
This method works very quickly to determine your skin type. First, wash your face with a mild facial cleanser and then pat your face dry. Now just wait half an hour and then look in the mirror.
- Has your skin started to shine around your forehead, nose and cheeks? Then chances are you have oily skin.
- Does your skin feel tight and have spots or flakes appeared? Chances are your skin is dry.
- If your skin has different characteristics such as dry and oily areas, chances are you have combination skin.
- Did your skin turn red after using the cleanser and feel burning? Or is your skin in general a bit red and blotchy? Then you probably have sensitive skin.
- Does your skin look fresh and healthy, and doesn't bother you at all? Congratulations! You are blessed with normal skin.
2. The Blotting Paper Method
Cleanse your face and take out a sheet of kitchen roll or a tissue. Press it firmly on your face half an hour after cleansing and wait a while before removing it from your face.
- Has the tissue become very greasy? Then chances are you have oily skin.
- Is there hardly any greasiness at all? Then you can label your skin type as dry.
- If you have normal or combination skin, you will see a normal amount of greasiness on the wipe.
3. Ask a dermatologist
If the above tips do not fully convince you, you can always consult a dermatologist just to be sure. This specialist will help you determine what type of skin you have.
