How long is half-long hair and long hair?
To check if you have the right article in front of you, we talk about half-long hair and long hair for men when we talk about the following lengths:
Half-long hair: 15 cm to 20 cm
Long hair: 20 cm and longer
Do's and don'ts with medium length hair
- DO: Apply styling to dry/near-dry hair. With wet hair, there is still too much water in your hair and these (water-based) products mix with the water in your hair, eliminating the styling characteristics of the products. Eventually you do get some hold in your hair, but dry hair works so much better
- DO: Wash with a Shampoo and treat with a Conditioner. Half-length hair quickly becomes weighed down because there is too much styling or residue from old styling in your hair. This makes it impossible to get volume and the desired shape. So always start with washed and clean hair. Conditioner cares for your hair and prevents a dry bunch of 'rope'. Be careful with conditioner, do not use too much, a drop the size of a 2 euro coin is often enough.
- DO: Go for Matte Styling Products. There is the occasional exception, for example a mega RockABilly Pompadour. For the rest, use matte products. You don't want shine in half-long hair; it quickly looks like a greasy bunch.
- DO: Pomade to Paste. Leave a Pomade or Wax in the closet and try a Strong/High Hold Paste or Cream. Pomade wants to weigh your hair down quite a bit, taking all the volume out of your hair. Paste and Cream with a High Hold are ideal lightweight products to give lots of volume and hold to a mid-length hairstyle.
-
DO: Blow-dry with a Surf Spray/Salt Spray. Volume is King with mid-length hair and so is a good hold. In this, a Surf Spray or a Sea Salt Spray is the ideal pre-styler and provides better hold and much more volume.

Do's and Don'ts with medium length hair
-
DO: Blow dry and style. Volume is 'key' with longer hair and you bring this in by blow-drying.
A loose pre-styler such as a Surf Spray also often works well in long hair as complete styling. So use a pre-styling product with heat protection and apply it before you blow dry. That way you're done in one go - DON'T: Pomade. Don't use Pomades or other heavy styling products in long hair. It weighs down your hair, takes out the volume and ultimately makes it look like a greasy bunch.
-
DO: Wash with a Shampoo and treat with a Conditioner. Long hair gets heavier quickly because there is too much styling or residue from old styling in your hair. This makes it impossible to get volume and the desired style. So always start with washed and clean hair. Conditioner cares for your hair and prevents a dry bunch of 'rope'. Be careful with conditioner, do not use too much, a drop the size of a 2 euro coin is often enough.
