Facial care is the most important part of your morning or evening routine. To properly care for your face, you must of course knowwhat skin type you have. You can have dry skin, oily skin, mature skin or combination skin. Today we are going to focus on facial care for men with oily skin.
Oily skin is not nice and is especially visible on your forehead, nose and chin. For example, large pores, blackheads or bumps can often be seen. In addition, your face sometimes shines like an oiled billiard ball, feels greasy and can eventually cause acne if you don't take care of it properly. Don't be happy.
Many men then think that they have to wash extra to prevent it. This is counterproductive. You shouldn't treat the skin more roughly or harshly, as the primeval man in you might want. No, the art lies in a different, softer approach. The choice of product is very important here. We are going to take you through the process of tackling oily skin, giving love and transforming it into healthy skin. Let's go!
How do I know if I have oily skin?
Every skin is different and that is why it is sometimes difficult to determine. Therefore, you have several ways to find out which skin type you have. Do this 1x and you will immediately know which skin type you have.
Bare Face method
- Wash your face with a mild facial cleanser and then gently pat your face dry. Wait about 30 minutes and then look in the mirror at what you see.
- Has your skin started to shine around your forehead, nose and cheeks? Then chances are you have oily skin.
- Does your skin feel tight and have spots or flakes appeared? Chances are your skin is dry.
- If your skin has different characteristics such as dry and oily areas, chances are you have combination skin.
- Has your skin turned red after using the cleanser and does it feel burning? Or is your skin generally a bit red and blotchy? Then you probably have sensitive skin.
- Does your skin look fresh and healthy, and are you not bothered by anything? Congratulations! You are blessed with 'normal skin'.
Blotting Paper method
- Cleanse your face and grab a paper towel or tissue. Press it firmly on your face half an hour after cleansing and wait a while before removing it from your face.
- Has the cloth become very greasy? Then there is a good chance that you have oily skin.
- Is there no oiliness to be seen? Then you can label your skin type as dry.
- If you have normal or combination skin, you will see a small amount of oil on the wipe.
Why do you have oily skin?
Your sebaceous glands are working overtime. Probably well-intentioned, but the result is oily skin. It is the exact opposite of people with dry skin, where the sebaceous glands do very little. That shiny layer on your face? Excess sebum.
Oily skin can have various causes. For example, some people naturally have oily skin. Climate, diet and hormones can also play a role in causing oily skin. Wrong care products can also result in oily skin.
What you can do as a man against oily skin
If everything is recognizable so far, then we can officially welcome you to the oily skin club. But that's not drama. There are a lot of things to do so that you don't suffer from this (anymore).
It's all about the right approach. What most men do is to counter oily skin as much as possible with an aggressive cleanser that removes too much fat from the face. Your sebaceous glands then think that the face is getting dehydrated and then, you guessed it: produce extra sebum. This will give you an even oilier skin. Stench for thanks! It is therefore best to provide the skin with the right nutrition and moisture. This will calm down your sebaceous glands.
What you better not do
Excessively hard cleaning and scrubbing therefore does not work. In addition, you want to avoid anything that can dry out your skin. So do not use products with alcohol, lots of perfume, mineral oils and sulfates. Always check the ingredient list of a product! You can of course also filter for products that are specially made for oily skin.
How do you care for oily skin?
So now you know what causes oily skin and what you should not do to avoid getting oily skin. Now you can get the best care for your oily skin. Follow this three-step routine.
1. Use a mild facial cleanser
Clean your oily skin every morning and evening to remove excess sebum and prevent clogged pores. A mild cleaner is free of sulphates. These degrease the skin too much. Use a mild cleaner, but be gentle yourself. Use lukewarm water and lightly massage over the skin with your hands.
2. Moisturize the skin with a face cream for men
If you only cleanse, you put the sebaceous glands back to work because you dry out the skin. You can do this with two products. After cleansing, apply a water-based serum containing hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid binds to moisture in the skin. This makes it more resilient. It keeps your skin supple without clogging pores.
After applying the serum you can apply a light day cream or gel without heavy oils or butters. This nourishes the skin without putting another layer of oils on the natural sebum.
3. Use a men's mask
Once a week, use a mask that gives your face a moisture boost. This soothes the sebaceous glands without giving you a shiny effect or clogging your skin. A good mask for oily skin is a mask with clays. These naturally remove blemishes and clean without being aggressive.
After the mask, remember to nourish the skin immediately with the serum and day cream from step 2. Otherwise, a mask can have a drying effect.
