Why use a shaving brush?

A shaving brush is a brush that is used in "wet". Shed Is it shaving with a shaving soap and a razor (preferably one Safety Razor). This is the opposite of "dry" shaving where only a shaver is used. With a shaving brush you can make a creamy foam, making shaving easier and more comfortable. The foam that produces the brush hydrates the beard hairs, making them softer and easier to shave. The foam also applies a protective layer to the skin, making the knife slips more easily over the skin and shaving irritations are prevented.

Different types of shaving brushes

Shaving "wet" is very popular nowadays and the demand for shaving brushes is therefore very high. Due to the high demand, many types of brushes are offered. This makes it very difficult to choose a good shaving brush. To clarify the choice between the different shaving brushes, we have listed the different types of brushes for you.

Shaving brushes of badger hair

The shaving brushes of badger hair are generally the most popular kind of shaving brushes there are. Bad hairs are very soft, absorb a lot of moisture and produce a rich foam which ensures a comfortable shave and a perfect shaving result. Dassen Haren are more difficult to obtain and are therefore a lot more expensive as pork and synthetic brush hairs. The badger hairs last a very long time and are divided into three categories:

Silvertip badger hair (Silvertip Badger)

The absolute top in the field of badger hair. Silvertip is characteristic of its shiny silver color and the black belt that runs through the hair. Silvertip comes from the neck and back of the tie, the hairs are specially selected and checked before they continue for Silvertip brush hairs. The hair is very soft and has a high foaming capacity due to its enormous moisture. These characteristics make the hair very popular for shaving brushes and can only be found on shaving brushes of the highest quality.

Finely tie pie hair (best bather or fine bather)

The finely tastes are slightly stiffer than the silvert tip. The hairs for these brushes come from the back and one by a small part of the belly of the tie. In contrast to the hair of the Silvertip, these brushes are mechanically assembled by Muhle. Although the hair is the second choice, they remain the finely brushes of high quality. The brushes have a very good moisture absorption so that they are able to produce a full foam.

Graudas Fie hair (Pure Badger)

Graudas Haren come from the belly of the tie. The Graudas brushes are the third quality brushes made of badger hair. Nevertheless, these brushes are still of high quality, because the belly of the tie just contains more hair, these brushes are cheaper in terms of price than the fine dass and the silvert tip. The hairs are slightly stiffer and take a little less moisture. They still have a fine skin feeling and produce a rich foam.

Synthetic shaving brushes

For those who do not want to use animal products, there are synthetic hairs. The synthetic hairs in terms of price between tie and pig hairs. The synthetic hairs absorb enough moisture to produce a good foam and can no longer be distinguished with badger hairs in terms of softness. An advantage of one synthetic shaving brush Is that it dries up very quickly and that the hairs are perfect for people with acne and sensitive skin.

Pork hair

A pork hair Is a lot cheaper than a brush with badger hair. Pork hairs are thicker, stronger and stiffer than badger hair and therefore feel a lot less comfortable than badger hairs. An advantage of these hairs is that they produce more foam faster. After using the brush for a while, the hair will wear a little and become softer, making them feel better. The pork hairs naturally have a white to yellow color but are sometimes painted to give it the appearance of badger hairs. Pork hairs are easily available for a very affordable price.

What is the best shaving brush?

This is personally for everyone. We ourselves have a wide variety of enthusiasts who buy a badger hair shaving brush because this works best for them. But such a large crowd fans is also warm for both the pig and the horse hair variant.

Now, however, we notice that the synthetic shaving brush is on the rise. The quality is now so good that the difference between a shaving brush with badger hair or the fiber is nil. So if you have the best with animals, you should go for the fiber variant.

How do you use a shaving brush?

Most shaving brushes, if they are used and maintained well, last for a very long time. Below you can see in steps how to use a shaving brush well.

  1. Wet the hairs of the brush with lukewarm water.
  2. Beat the excess water from the brush, the brush must be moist but not soaked.
  3. Take a small shaving soap or shaving cream in your shaving bowl.
  4. Beat this into a good foam with the brush.
  5. Apply this to the spots to be shared and let the foam work in.
  6. Start shaving.
  7. Rinse with lukewarm water and rinse the brush well and make sure there are no more soap residues in the hair.

How do I maintain my shaving brush?

If you want to enjoy your shaving brush for a long time, you must maintain it well in addition to good use. When you maintain your shaving brush properly, you will notice that it will last a very long time and stays good. How long your brush lasts depends on the type of brush. A silvert tip brush lasts 10 years or more, while a pure bather brush lasts 3 years. The Middenweg is the Best Badger Kwast (6 years) and the Super Badger Kwast (up to 10 years). Below you can see a number of points that you should pay attention to when maintaining your brush regardless of the type of hair:

  • Always wet your shaving brush with lukewarmWarm water, hot water can damage the hair of the brush.
  • After use, rinse the shaving brush clean well to prevent soap residues from being stuck between the hairs that can mold.
  • Always beat the remaining water out of the brush when you squeeze out of it, you damage the hair.
  • After rinsing, hang the brush in reverse in a holder, so the remaining moisture can still flow out and you prevent fungus and hair loss from being created.
  • When applying a foam, put a small pressure, press the hairs not flat on your skin.
  • Use a shaving soap or cream of good quality, cheap soaps from, for example, the supermarket are very bad for your brush and cause hair loss.
  • Keep the brush in reverse in a shaving brush holder in a dry place.
  • Do not store a brush in a toilet bag.

Now that you know how to maintain your brush properly, you naturally also want to know if you maintain your brush properly. And whether your brush needs to be replaced. You notice this when hair breaks or drop out, fungus arises, the hair feels greasy and/or sticky and when a dust cloud is created when you iron your hands over the dry hair.
