Pomade is the most popular product men use to style their hair. Unfortunately, we still often see and hear that men go wrong with the use of their pomade, not getting the most out of it. This is because a pomade is applied differently than a wax, clay or gel. So it's important to master exactly how to use a pomade. That's why we've written down the ins-and-outs for you. Here we go.
Choose the right pomade
Okay: which pomade to use. It starts with poking around among the online shelves. You end up in a maze of different pomades that all make fancy promises. How in f*cks sake is there any way to choose from them? Well, it all starts with a bit of knowledge. Educate yourself beforehand about which pomade is best for your hair type. For example, you can choose pomade for long hair, medium hair or short hair. Also choose right away whether you want to go for a matte or glossy finish. You should also consider whether you want to go for a water-based pomade or an oil-based pomade. If you are going to use an oil-based pomade, keep in mind that it will be a lot harder to wash out of your hair.
The better the product suits your preferences, the more satisfied you will be with your pomade. Still not quite sure? Then you have a bunch of pomade-loving Internet friends who will be happy to help you with that! (I'm talking about us, the Alpha team, in case the hint wasn't clear).
Applying pomade
You've got the right pomade for hair in the house, read lots of good reviews and now it's really time for the baptism of fire. You get to work on your own. But, how do I apply pomade the right way? To make it as easy as possible for you, we have set up some steps for that.
Step 1: Towel dry hair.
When your hair is towel dry, the pomade for your hair will be able to do its job better. When it is too wet you get a kind of wet-look, also good of course, but then you have to consciously choose that. If your hair is towel dry, it is easier to model and it will stay longer the way you want it to.
Step 2: Warm the pomade in your hands and distribute it
Now for the step where many men go wrong. A pomade is not a wax. It's not like you take a lick of pomade with your fingers and start spreading it directly into your hair. No, the application is done with your palms. Therefore, take a lick of pomade (not too much!), put it on your palms and then rub them together. You need to do this so that the pomade becomes warm due to the friction between your palms. In addition, it is also ideal for distributing the pomade in your hair.
Step 3: Applying pomade in your hair
Never start at the front. It works best if you work it in from the sides. When you start at the front you get the most product here and this will show. Also, always start at your scalp and work it towards the bottom of your hair. Basically apply it as if you were washing your hair with shampoo, start at crown and work forward. And of course, don't forget to include your backside in this process!
Step 4: Styling your hairstyle with a comb
Men's claws are not subtle, so the outcome of styling with your hands will not be subtle either. If you want to go for a slightly more subtle look, we recommend combing your hair through with a comb. Your look will instantly become a lot more refined.
Washing out pomade
Is washing out pomade easy? Well, this depends entirely on whether you chose a water-based or an oil-based pomade. A water-based pomade is easy to wash out of your hair, as you simply wash it out with warm water (and often a little shampoo). Should you want to wash a firm oil-based pomade out of your hair, you will need to come up with some coarser tools. There are special products developed for pomade or oil-based that make this easier, such as a clariyfing shampoo or scrub shampoo. If you want to wash it out with a regular shampoo, you have to grab at least 2x shampoo and scrub your scalp and hair well.
