What does a moisturizer do?

Wat doet een vochtinbrengende crème?

A moisturizer is the literal translation of a moisturizer, a word we often come across when it comes to taking care of your face. But what exactly is a moisturizer and how do you choose the right moisturizer in the jungle of skincare? Put on your expedition outfit, because we are going to dive into that very jungle today.

What is a moisturizer and what does it do?

Having tight, itchy, red skin is no fun. Nor does it exactly make you happy to have skin with acne, blemishes or an oily shine. Fortunately, you don't have to accept your fate for what it is, because a moisturizer can help you well in these areas. A moisturizer ensures that your skin is well hydrated, and let this be exactly what is necessary for having healthy skin. When your skin is well hydrated, it will be better protected from external influences. The better your skin can retain moisture, the less you will suffer from all the irritations that skin can give.

A moisturizer comes in many different shapes, sizes and textures. For example, it can be a day cream, night cream or serum. What matters most is its function: moisturizing. And a lot too! Your skin will immediately tell you if you have the right moisturizer. Your skin will look healthier, younger, plumper and brighter. We also call this the "moisturizer effect." However, you need to make sure that you choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type, otherwise it is obviously not a match made in heaven. Therefore, first check carefully what skin type you have.

Moisturizer for dry skin

Your skin can become tight, flaky, red and even suffer from eczema. Your dry skin is crying out for one thing: hydration! So a moisturizer can also be the solution to all your skin problems. Always look for a nice oily moisturizer that can penetrate deep into your skin. The magic words? Shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are also ingredients to filter for, as these are true moisturizers.

Moisturizer for oily skin

You probably know it. Shiny, oily skin after a few hours and you're always easily prone to blemishes. Not exactly a joy either. And now we often hear it "but my skin is already too oily, then I'm not going to moisturize it, am I?" Wrong! In fact, oily skin is the result of an oily skin type combined with a dehydrated skin condition. Therefore, it is at least as important to properly moisturize oily skin. In fact, in addition to oily moisturizers, you also have water-based moisturizers specifically designed for oily skin. So never choose the oily moisturizers, but there may be fats in your moisturizer. For example, look at linoleic acid, an oil that has proven itself for oily skin more than once.

Moisturizer for sensitive skin

With the sensitive skin type, your skin will immediately indicate whether or not it appreciates something. Your skin reacts quickly to substances and can then become irritated. So your skin does not react well to some essential oils, such as citrus or cinnamon. Fortunately, moisturizers have been developed especially for this skin type! So moisturize: yes. Perfume, dyes, etc.: no. Rather choose a natural moisturizer. For this skin type, for example, niacinamide, panthenol, vitamin C, vitamin E and allantoin are active substances that work well. Always make sure you choose a moisturizer for sensitive skin.

Moisturizer for combination or normal skin

May we congratulate you for the fact that your skin has few problems? Good, because this is the skin type that is the nicest to have! Nevertheless, your skin can also dry out (slightly), which is why a moisturizer is always a nice pick-me-up.

When you have a mixed skin type, different parts of your face react differently than other parts. For example, your T zone (your nose and forehead) may react differently than your cheeks and chin to different creams. So you can choose two different moisturizers and use them on different areas. You can also choose one moisturizer for your whole face, then pay attention to ingredients like calendula, chamomile, witch hazel, lemon balm, etc. These ingredients work antibacterial, clarifying, pore-refining and will regulate your sebum production.

What is the best moisturizer for men?

So, what is the best moisturizer depends entirely on your skin type. In fact, we do not recommend (to put it mildly) using a moisturizer for dry skin if you have oily skin. Also, always check your own preferences. There are vegan moisturizers, natural moisturizers, etc. Read the description carefully and check the ingredient list!
