Facial care has not been just for women for a long time now. Thankfully, because why shouldn't we also keep our skin as optimal as possible? See, we fortunately have the advantage that our skin ages later. In addition, it is always said that men become more handsome as they age. But this does not imply that we should not take care of older skin.
We dare put our hand in the fire that the "grey foxes" like George Clooney, David Beckham and Robert Downey Jr. also use comprehensive facial care. So let's delve into the details of older skin and how best to care for it.
How do I know if I have aging skin?
To start with facial care, it is always helpful to know what skin type you have. Every skin type has its own characteristics, and so does older skin. Do you recognize yourself in (most of) the points below? Then you may well conclude that you have older skin.
- Wrinkles
- Crow's feet
- Thinning skin
- Dry skin
- Skin pigmentation
- Skin irritation
- Sagging skin (especially on the neck, eyelids and cheeks)
Do these points sound very familiar to you? Then you have older skin. Don't worry, you can do something yourself to counteract and prolong the natural process!
Why do you have aging skin?
Whether you have good genes or not, every skin ages in time. But there are quite a few things that speed up or stimulate this process. We walk you through them.
Decreased cell turnover
As you age, cell renewal in your body decreases. An important protein in the body also decreases: collagen. Collagen is extremely important for your skin because it keeps your skin elastic, firm and radiant and ensures that the moisture level in your skin remains balanced.
Once your collagen production decreases, you will become saggier and less even. This causes wrinkles, furrows, etc. to form in your skin and will cause it to droop more.
Stress
Stress is actually a culprit for everything, including your skin. For example, it has been scientifically proven that stress speeds up your skin's aging process. Prolonged stress releases more radicals that your genetic material wants to break down. So the cells will stop dividing sooner, resulting in skin aging. Also, cortisol (the hormone released by stress) attacks collagen in your skin.
Smoking and alcohol
It is common knowledge that this lifestyle is not good for your body at all. When you smoke, you ingest the substance nicotine. Nicotine is known to constrict blood vessels. So too the blood vessels in your face. So oxygen, nutrients and vitamins are not optimally absorbed into your face.
Looking at alcohol doesn't make you happy either. Alcohol actually dehydrates your body. This in turn can affect your collagen, which will cause your skin to dry out faster and form wrinkles.
UV radiation
Let's not forget this one. This is because the sun is (unfortunately) the biggest contributor to aging skin. UV radiation is the most damaging to your skin when we talk about skin aging. Also, this damage to your skin is irreversible. Lots of sun exposure can dry out your skin. Always protect yourself with at least an SPF factor of 30, but preferably an SPF factor of 50 for your face.
Tips for men with aging skin
So we all eventually face aging skin. And let's face it, every age has its beauty. But of course there are tips that will help you keep your skin as young as possible for as long as possible.
- Protect your skin from the sun. As we just told you, UV radiation is the biggest culprit for your skin. Therefore, we recommend that you always apply sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun. Not only when it is sunny, but also when it is cloudy. Not only in summer, but also in autumn and winter. That way you protect your skin and sun damage will be preventable, So choose a face cream with SPF or a good sunscreen with a high factor.
- Leave nicotine behind. If you don't smoke: good for you. Otherwise, we recommend you quit. That way, your collagen won't be attacked and you won't affect the elasticity of your skin.
- Eat healthy! We can't say it often enough, but good skin glows from the inside out. If you eat plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, these will eventually end up in your skin. Proteins and fats are also an important part of healthy skin. So make sure you eat healthy and varied foods.
- Rest, regularity and sleep. The natural counterparts of stress. In this way, you ensure that your skin can relax again. Sleep is incredibly important for the skin because it recovers during the time you sleep. Without the stress hormone cortisol, your collagen also stays healthy. And we know by now how important collagen is for the skin!
- Use a solid day-and-night cream. Of course, there are an awful lot of creams on the market. But for mature skin, it is important to use a cream designed specifically for it. For example, almost all anti-aging creams contain hyaluronic acid, which provides proper hydration and and niacinamide ensures that your skin stays even. So always check the ingredients and how they work.
- Do facial yoga or connective tissue massages. Yes friends, it exists. But it really is proven to work anyway. With facial yoga, you train your facial muscles so that they stay supple and elastic. The result? Increased collagen production in the skin of your face. Connective tissue massages you can also do yourself at home. It's a heavy-handed massage that focuses specifically on firming your skin and making fine lines disappear. Looks all extraordinary, but the results have already left several men amazed. Try before you die.
- Drink plenty of water. Our skin is our largest organ. Organs are made up of cells. Cells are made up of water. And so we have come full circle. Water carries away waste products, which is why it is important to drink enough (about 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day) water.

Make sure you have a good facial care routine. Facial care and its steps are very important for the quality and firmness of your skin. Of course, we are going to explain that further below!
How to take care of aging skin?
1. Cleanse with an oil-based facial cleanser.
The first step in facial care is always a good cleansing, and so for mature skin as well. However, it is important to consider the type of cleanser than you should use. For example, for mature skin, it is recommended to use an oil-based facial cleanser.
With an oil-based cleanser, your skin is not stripped of its natural oils and therefore will not dry out further. Therefore, always use a cleanser that is not too harsh. Natural oils in the mild cleanser nourish the skin and moisturize dull spots. And that's just what you want for your skin!
- Cleanse your face with lukewarm water
- Take a small amount of cleanser and gently massage it into your face
- Massage in circular motions
- Rinse off the cleanser again with lukewarm water
- Pat your face dry with a clean towel
2. Use a toner
A good toner provides a bit of preparation for the other products in this routine. In addition, it restores the PH level of your facial skin. A good toner for mature skin will promote your skin's elasticity and reduce small lines.
- Put a little toner on a cotton pad
- Dab the cotton pad over your face
- You can just leave the toner on your face
3. Use a scrub once every 3 days
You don't have to do this one daily, but it is important to keep up. A mild facial scrub removes dead skin cells and stimulates the skin to produce new cells. This cell division in turn allows your skin to better absorb the active ingredients of your skin care.
- Make sure your skin is wet
- Take some product and begin to gently massage into your face
- Massage in circular motions from the inside out
- Wash off with lukewarm water
4. Use a day cream or night cream for men
Time to apply your day cream or night cream. Of course, it goes without saying that here too you need to look carefully at the ingredients and how they work. Anti-aging is the magic word you are looking for for the right day and night cream.
- Remove your cream from the jar or container with spatula or clean hands
- Apply the cream to your face
- Massage in gently with circular movements
- Start in the center and work outward
- Avoid the eye area
- Let the cream soak into your skin during the day/night
5. Eye Care
This step is especially important for mature skin. The skin around the eyes often becomes saggy and dull faster than the rest of the skin. With facial care, you often work around the eyes because they are so vulnerable. That's why it's important to give a little extra attention to your eyes and apply an eye cream.
- Apply a small amount to your fingertips
- Gently dab around the eye area
- Wait for it to soak into your skin
6. Mask
Use a face mask about 2 to 3 times a week to give your skin an extra hydration, refresher and deep cleanse. Choose a mask that will replenish your moisture balance and soften wrinkles.
- Apply a thin layer to your face (avoid your eyes)
- Let the mask dry gently without touching it
- Rinse off with lukewarm water
