Almost every man has tried to grow his hair longer at one time or another. Most of those men still give up after a few months. This is unfortunate because it can really change your look and give you a renewed look as a person.
Often men give up because after a while the hair can't be styled and it becomes uncomfortable to walk around with a hairstyle that doesn't sit right. It takes some patience and perseverance to get nice long locks. With the right approach, it doesn't have to be such agony at all.
Look at what suits you
The most common problem with men who want to grow their hair longer is that they don't know what they're getting into. They wake up one day and decide to start growing their hair out. Often without a particular model in their mind. They see a model in a magazine, a friend with long hair or an actor who looks great with long hair. No thought at all is given to what kind of head that friend or actor has and what kind of hairline. This is what determines whether the cut will suit you or whether it is possible at all.
Maybe you have coves and can't get that full look. Or it may look completely different from what you envisioned. Also, the look you want may not fit the shape of your face at all. So always look in advance at the shape of your face and how your hair flows. Then, when you have a certain cut in mind, you know what to work toward and you can discuss it with your hairdresser.
Get a regular haircut
This sounds a little crazy and many men do not go to the barber at all when they want to grow their hair. This is also the biggest cause of a wild ugly bunch of hair on your head.
You will still just have to go to the hairdresser so that your hair keeps a certain shape and so that you can still get your hair modeled. For example, the sides can be made a little shorter and longer on top. Often you can then always grow out the sides later. So you really don't have to have an ugly hairstyle in that in-between phase. You have to guide the growth of the hair so that it grows to a certain model. Going to the barber also prevents split ends which keeps it looking groomed.
Use the right products
When your hair is longer you will need to use different products than when you have short hair. You can leave the jars of clay closed. Lighter products are used with longer hair. Generally the best products for longer hair are cream and paste. Depending on how thick your hair is, of course. If you have thicker and tougher hair, a cream is the better option.
A paste is a little thicker and gives more texture than a cream and offers a little more hold. Suitable for men with thinner hair. A cream offers a little bit of control but is mainly meant to make your hair fall nicely in a certain direction and give a little shine. If you want a more rugged or summery look go for a sea salt spray.
Care for your hair differently
Use a gentle shampoo with not too many chemicals. It's best to just use a shampoo with only natural ingredients;choose for example Doers of London, Doers of London Shampoo is a shampoo made from purely natural ingredients. Also, don't use shampoo every day. With short hair, we don't recommend it, but with long hair, definitely not. What you do need to do every day is to use a conditioner. It keeps your hair strong and soft. It provides your hair with vitamins and other nourishing ingredients.
So wash once or twice a week with a shampoo and daily with a conditioner. Always use a conditioner after shampoo because otherwise the shampoo will wash away the oils of the conditioner. Is your hair very dry? Use a hair mask or leave-in conditioner to give your hair extra nourishment.
Brush your hair a few times a week so that the oils in your hair are distributed so well. It also prevents tangles in your hair and split ends. The oils produced by your scalp itself reach all parts of the hair this way.
Styling long hair
Have you never had long hair before? Then it's not surprising that you have no idea how to style your hair. We explain in a few steps how you could do it.
- After showering/washing your hair, dry it with a towel. Leave it still slightly damp.
- Want texture? Add some sea salt spray. Knead the hair so the sea salt spray is well distributed and creates texture.
- You can now add some cream whenever you want. Take a fingertip of cream and rub it between palms. Divide well through the hair.
- Blow-dry the hair when you want a little more hold and texture. For a more natural look, you can just leave it on.
- Does your hair get frizzy and dry during the day? Then add some hair oil after styling.
