We have all suffered from greasy hair at one time or another. For most men, it comes from not washing their hair for too long. However, it can also happen that it is caused by something completely different. Do you suffer from greasy hair yourself? Then read on, we give you the best tips on what to do about greasy hair.
Causes oily hair
Our skin, through our sebaceous glands, always produces its own oils all over the body, including on the scalp. So we always get oils in our hair. These are also needed to keep our hair healthy. It also protects the skin. Oily hair gets when too much oil accumulates. Then your hair feels greasy and starts to look dirty. This "build-up" can have several causes.
Washing the hair too often.
It's a logical reaction. When you suffer from greasy hair, you automatically start washing more often because you want to get rid of the greasy hair. Washing hair too often only causes all the natural oils to be washed away. This causes the sebaceous glands to produce even more oil to compensate for the oil washed away. This results in oily skin and greasy hair.
Touching your hair all day long
We all want our hair to look good. Every time we go through our hair with our hands, body oil from our hands gets into the hair. So if you sit with your hands through your hair all day, it becomes a greasy mess.
Using the comb or brush too often
Combing and brushing the hair stimulates the production of oil.
Stress
It has been proven that stress plays a role in sebum secretion. So this can cause excess oil.
Genes
Some men have naturally higher sebaceous gland production. Also called oily skin. Do your parents or other family members have oily skin? Then chances are you too have this in yourself.
Using the wrong products
Do you always use wax, oil-based pomade or heavy conditioner? These products quickly accumulate too many oils. Especially if you already have fairly oily skin of your own, this happens quickly.
Thin hair
If you do not have very thick hair, oily hair is more likely to occur. Thin hair has less surface area to absorb the oil, so too much oil will quickly build up.
What You Can Do About Oily Hair
Fortunately, there is almost always something you can do about oily hair. If you don't yet know exactly what is causing it, you can test various things and see if anything changes. Read our tips below.
Wash two to three times a week
Always washing your hair with shampoo is not necessary when you wash yourself. If you use an oil-based pomade, of course, it's a different story. Wash your hair with shampoo two to three times a week and use only warm water the rest of the week.
Use a different shampoo
Try a dry shampoo or shampoo based on menthol or tea tree. Menthol and tea tree provide a good oil balance on the scalp and know how to rid the hair of dirt well.
An alternative you could try is lemon juice. Lemon juice has a degreasing effect and thus can also counteract oily hair. Mix the juice of one lemon with 100 ml of water and rinse it through your hair.
Avoid products with added oils
Many products for the hair and scalp contain argan oil, for example. Always check the ingredients for oils and try to avoid conditioners and shampoos with such ingredients.
Leave the conditioner for a while
Leaving the conditioner on for a while can sometimes work wonders and might just be the solution to your problem. A conditioner softens and moisturizes the hair. With oily hair, you could be talking about excess hydration.
Eat more healthily
If you eat a lot of food with a high fat content, you are going to see that reflected in your skin and therefore your hair. So make sure you don't eat too many fatty things and try to get enough fruits and vegetables as well. With enough vitamins and minerals, your skin is better able to balance moisture production.
